Vacationing in Athens
There are those who say that nothing compares to a holiday at sea. Some travelers prefer organized cruises aboard luxury liners with itineraries taking in several ports of call; others prefer the private comforts of a mechanized yacht, while others claim there is nothing as liberating or joyful as the feeling of sailing the open seas. Ultimately, it’s a matter of personal preferences and choice. But whichever type of sea holiday floats your boat, prepare for the experience of a lifetime.
Organized Cruises are Ideal for any Tourist
Greece is idyllic for long or short cruises as both offer visitors the opportunity to see a number of destinations. The Aegean’s mild climate also makes it attractive as a cruise destination outside the summer months – and the sea and islands are especially lovely in September, October, April, and May, although it’s also quite pleasant to cruise in November or in March.
Opting for an organized cruise is like booking into a luxury resort – it’s the perfect choice for anyone who likes being pampered and enjoys having a range of amenities at hand, from squash to spa. Long cruises call at a number of ports, with harbor stays timed to give cruisers enough to visit important archaeological sites, unique churches and monasteries, monuments of more recent periods, extremely interesting museums and traditional settlements and villages as well as to enjoy the natural beauties in many of the country’s regions at each destination. Itineraries take in a number of ports, usually combining destinations in the Cyclades, like Mykonos, with Dodecanese destinations like Rhodes and Patmos.
Why I’m planning a Holiday to Greece
So back in 2012, when I visited Greece, I knew that I wanted to have the best of my time at the place, but I was constrained by time since I had gone there for business rather than on a vacation. Therefore because of the limited time, I could only afford to take short cruises which were a bit flexible and left me with time to attend to pother business matters.
It was on the third day that my schedule wasn’t tight and thus I had the opportunity to visit the Saronic Gulf islands. It is these short cruises that made me rethinking of taking my family on a vacation to Greece one day because they enable me gauge the ambiance of the several islands ahead and thus it will be easier for me to plan for a vacation.
That day a met some friendly group of guys on holiday, Dave, Harriet, Steve and their friends and as I was busy trying to hire the services of a yacht, they offered me a place in there company because I was alone and they thought it would be more fun for me to join them. I didn’t object, because their idea so me cut by budget almost threefold which offered comparative advantage to me given that I was travelling on a budget.
It was all merry as we set out in the yacht, enjoying some fine Greece wine and chatting while all along taking pictures of the beautiful sceneries. I loved the ambiance of the morning and the soft breeze which greeted us with the fresh air of Greece waters. We spend the greater part of the morning in the open seas before deciding to dock later in the afternoon.
The Beauty of Poros
Our first stop was Poros, from where we proceeded to Askeli Beach. It wasn’t my plan. But as we strolled from the harbor and hand a nature walk towards the beach in the company of our guides, I started to blend in and the idea of visiting the beach sounded a good one. We met awesome locals and most of them were hospitable and greeted us cheerfully in a welcoming manner.
The beach was clean and not crowded and we were able to hire some cottages where we spend the afternoon in the white sandy beaches having fun and joking around. In the evening we decided to do some boating before we went back to the hotel where we had booked to spend the night. I loved everything about the beach and Poros in general because of the hospitality of the locals as well as the staff.
The following morning, I had to get back to Athens because I had unfinished business and it was sad saying bye to my new friends who wanted that we continue cruising together. They understood my position and let me go. However, I’m planning of visiting the place for a vacation in some years to come. Maybe that time I will take a longer cruise and adventure more in Greece.
